CHEC is a citywide institution and admission to the upper (Bell) and lower (Lincoln) houses are on a first come basis. All new applicants must complete a written application and be interviewed. Students may apply throughout the year, but it is best to apply early, as there is a waiting list. Students must be D.C. residents and be willing to participate in a multicultural environment.


According to DCPS registration and residency verification must be completed every year to enroll your child in school.
Residency can be established using the following documents with your name and current address:
Any one (1) of these:
A pay stub showing DC tax withholdings
Proof of financial assistance (i.e. TANF, SSI, Medicaid, SCHIP, Housing, etc.)
Official military housing orders
Proof child is a ward of the District of Columbia
Embassy letter
In the absence of an item listed above, any two (2) of these:
DC driver's license or DC non-
Lease or rental agreement with payment receipt
DC Vehicle Registration
Gas, electric, or water bill with payment receipt
